Shaykh Abd al-Basit Abd al-Samad (born in 1927) is one of the four top-ranking
Quranic reciters from Egypt. In 1950 he had shifted to Cairo from the city of
Armant in Upper Egypt. He had developed a good reputation in the south.
Though his grandfather was an Islamic scholar of al-Azhar training but Shaykh
Abd al-Basit Abd al-Samad became the first Qari in his family.
He is the first Quranic reciter from Egypt to have produced commercial
recordings of his Quranic reciting and he has traveled widely outside Egypt. This
has made his popularity grow even beyond Egypt.
He has recorded the complete text of the Qur'an in Murattal as well as the
Mujawwad styles. He was appointed as the first president of the newly founded
Reciters' Union. Shaykh Abd al-Basit Abd al-As a Quranic reciter he is
appreciated for his breath control and a high, clear (harimi) voice.
